It’s funny how the mind wanders, sometimes, off to distant recollection of one’s adolescence… in spite of some memory gaps, there are parts of my youth that I recall quite vividly, such as reading certain books, or watching some movies and tv shows ; their effects on my budding intellect as well as impacting my emotions and inspirations. This morning, for instance, I decided to re-reader Jane Eyre, which had been a positive influence, helping and directing me into the feminist movements more so than I had been before.
The importance of science-fiction has also been a center of my thoughts in the past, oh, 30 or so years really; I discovered this genre, partially because it was popular during my teen years; partially because of my difficult life then. They all left certain imprints on my mind, each for their own reasons: Star Trek to which I’m faithful to this day, but also less known ones as Chocky which had 2 spin-offs, or The Tripods, which was never finished; that one was in not so far a future, where Earth had been completely and utterly … DESTROYED and humanity left scarcely present, only to be slaves to some scary aliens who… wait a minute, I think I’ll let the details to another post...
In the meanwhile, I’d like to read the novels and finally get the end of the story, I think it’s about time! These two shows had really haunting intros, and became daily mantras. I’ll admit, even, that although they were made for teens, I’d watched them as an adult and still enjoyed them and appreciated their uniqueness as well as the major differences in their approaches.
How about also those animated shows which kept me coming back, year after year, watching them every single school holiday I could fetch them on tv (or record and watch the VHS, over, and over again, even though I’d seen them many times before and knew their endings…yes, that can clearly indicate to you in what age bracket I’m in!) I’m talking about Nils Holgersson- adapted from a novel which was meant first and foremost as a geography lesson (well, that’s how I understood it later) – or Belle and Sebastien, a story of a kid roaming around the Alps with his white dog which could scare a lot of people… but always had a great heart and helped in spite of being bullied…
Some shows, however, are meant to remain nostalgic droplets in my mind – and any of you who also watched them as kids and grew up… such as the really corny, yet magical for kids Rainbow Bright, riding on her horse and spreading rainbow in a world darkened by some evil sorcerer… (right? I think that was the gist of it, every single episode!), a bit like the Care bears, only with a girl and a horse… ummm… Hey, while at it, there were also the Flying House and Superbook, both dealing with time travel… into biblical times… LOLz!!
Ok, those were just propaganda, but rather well made for their kind… not that I’d be into them anymore especially since I divorced from religions altogether…
Well, expect the unexpected… I did have an entry for… not much but my musings of the moment… but, it’ll have some subsequent posts… till then, have fun, and maybe tell me of your memories?
