So, before reading her novels which were released from 1811 to 1817, in the following order :  Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma,  Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, I decided to go back to her teenage years, reading Love and Friendships, and other early works.

Book- the world of the dark crystal

Score: 10/10

132 pages + 20 (facsimile) - many have no texts, but illustrations

The world of the dark crystal is an exquisitely rich book, with many illustrations, sketches and diagrams pertaining to the Dark Crystal movie - which I suggest viewing before reading.

To my original movie review .

This book explores the movie, and gives background information on its earliest stages of development in the introduction by Brian Froud.
Some inlays extend one’s view into less obvious details in the art itself.

Then, the book has two sets of texts:  One in small fonts explaining various aspects of the Dark Crystal's world,  with its own astronomy, mythology, symbols and history - all invented for the purpose of this fantastic world, and even depicts sketches of objects and creatures seen in the movie for a split second, or not at all.

Most pages also have bigger fonts, and are called the Book of Aughra - one of the movies protagonists. These texts are written in the first person, in Aughra’s voice. They give additional information as to the movie’s quest and tells also of more distant past events which took place prior to the movie.

Everything about this book pushes one’s appreciation for the entire mythological and fantastic invention that is The Dark Crystal. You may find that you want to watch the movie again after reading, just like it did for me. Search for those new details you just learned about, and appreciate it even more, in an endless cycle.

This limited edition doesn’t just reprint the original book, but also includes a small, un-numbered 20 pages facsimile of the original concept drawings Brian Froud & Henson created to present the film to backers. The story is abridged and contains names that would be later changed, but you’ll get to read what backers did – knowing that the original treatment exists in a very limited number of copies around the world and are very rare.
