(e)Book – Love and friendship

  (e) Book –  Love and friendship Full title :  Love and friendship and other early works Author : Jane Austen Score : /10 Year : 1790 (original) ; 2012 (this edition) Publisher : Duke Classics   ISBN  978-1-62012-155-9  // 9781620121559  (ebook)  Pages :  Language: English Jane Austen is best known for her 6 novels, which all have been adapted into tv movies - but after having read Virginia Woolf's short fiction in chronological order, I decided to apply the same for Austen's publications, to better appreciate her growth and evolution in narrative style. So, before reading her novels which were released from 1811 to 1817, in the following order :  Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma,  Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, I decided to go back to her teenage years, reading Love and Friendships, and other early works.

Fav scifi & fantasy characters

Everyone knows that I'm a big sci-fi and fantasy fan, and you, my readers, may have seen quite a few entries on books, shows and movies in these genres.

I want to discuss a non-exhaustive list of favorite characters in this post, and shall expand to favorite villains, and later on to episodes for specific characters that appear or have been omitted from these lists.

Aragorn, Arwen, Eowyn, Frodo, Gandalf and Galadriel, are all characters in the Lord of the Rings books by JRR Tolkien and movie adaptations, directed by Peter Jackson (et al!). This book and movie series are my favorite in Fantasy genre.

Aragorn is a ranger with multiple qualities which I admire ; he's a fighter, not fearing death. He's a healer, capable of great compassionate acts in healing his companions, and he's very humble. He's also a romantic.

Arwen Undomiel, the half-elf, daughter of Elrond, gives up her immortality to fully experience a life with her lover. She's fearless and also a romantic, communicating through telepathy, and protects others by raising nature against evil.

Eowyn breaks with tradition by joining a war, supposed to be a province of men alone by her people. She's one of my favorite characters in LOTR, and love that the books expand on her stories quite a bit in comparison to the movies. She has one of my favorite lines in any novel/movie!

Frodo's only a small hobbit, that raises to greatness in the history of his people, in a quest to save the world, which shows that there are no limits to what a person can do, even if he or she feels too small. He has to find his courage, despite the tranquil life in his hobbit hole.

Gandalf's a really old but wise wizard ; he's an adventurer, leader, and a faithful friend, not afraid to put his life at high risks to save those he cares about. He's also shrouded in a lot of mystery and un-answered questions, which is something I really love, as it opens imaginative sub-plots in my mind.

Galadriel's a key in all the perilous missions the fellowship of the ring embarks upon. She's also a full elf, with great powers and wisdom.

----
Benjamin Sisko ; Chakotay ; one of the Doctors, Data, Guinan, Ishka, Jadzia Dax, Kassidy Yates, Martok, Kira Nerys ; Nyota Uhura, Odo, Jean-Luc Picard, Quark, Ro Laren, Spock ; Seven of Nine, Tuvix, Vic Fontaine and Worf are all from Star Trek universe, my favorite science-fiction.

I grew up watching TOS (the original Star Trek series) and the half-Vulcan character, Mr Spock, became a role model and I'd wished he were my father. His use of logic was an example that I tried my best to apply, and it is with this show that I had learned English. Spock has always been one of my most favorite characters, unique in so many ways, and I could relate so much to his lack of emotional affect, as my trauma had created dissociation, emotional numbing and that necessity had made me hide my feelings.
His dual culture helped me make the best out of my own melting pot and multiple cultural references, and influenced the person that I became.

Picard and Benjamin Sisko are 2 favorite captains. They share a passion for archaeology but everything else separates them, and their differences complete one another in wonderful ways, in my opinion. Their fates and personality traits seem on opposite sides of the same coin.
Picard is the diplomat who cannot stand children at first, whilst Sisko loves children - he's a single parent - and his dealings with diplomacy occur much later in his life, and skill that he develops whilst Picard is natural at it.

Chakotay's a rebel who brings his unique passion in fighting oppression, and has to learn a new kind of honor, and he knows when to fight or to be at peace, or to enter in dialogue with aliens.

Guinan's one of the most mysterious characters, whose writing has left far more questions than answers. She's old, much older than she appears. She's part of an alien race of listeners, and the most stable of them all, it appears. She's witty, funny, and original, always ready to take the side of the downtrodden and misfits.

Ishka defies societal norms in a race of misogynists who forbids her from wearing cloths, or making profit. She has many issues with her son, Quark, another of my favorite Star Trek character, and they both appear in my favorite scifi show ever : Deep Space 9.
Like his mother, he's a Ferengi, and despite his avarice, greed and socially accepted misogyny, he cannot help but be highly marked by his contact with the humans.

Odo's the best security agent in Star Trek. He's not even human, and not part of the federation, which gives this shape-shifter all the leeway to follow his own sense of justice. Oh, he's also a loner who prefers overworking when he's not regenerating, and has one of the biggest and longest story arcs in Star Trek (he's also  in Deep Space 9).

Worf and Martok are two kick-ass Klingons. They both break their own people's rules more than once, all the whilst being uniquely Klingon in their quests for honor and their beautiful friendship continues the bromances present all over Star Trek.

Data and Seven of Nine are two characters who want or have to learn to become human. They are similar, yet very different. Data's an android, and Seven's a Borg who ruffles many opinions, whilst Data tries really hard to emulate humans, a bit like Pinocchio, and a bit like a child who grows over time, into an adult, although he's always been one.
Data's  humble wonder, and Seven's arrogant use of knowledge are two sides of the same coin, actually.

Nyota Uhura's the very first communications officer in Star Trek. She's smart, and a talented singer. She also kicks ass, especially her alternate universe versions.

Tuvix's not your typical Vulcan... he's actually quite a bit more than that, and his story is unique in Star Trek. I won't say more to avoid spoilers.

Ro Laren and Kira Nerys are two Bajorans. In their culture, the last name comes first, and thus given names are Laren and Nerys. Initially, Laren was supposed to continue her story and cary from The Next Generation into DS9, but fate and writing decided otherwise. We thus get two kickass women, each in her own merits.

Jadzia Dax is also a kickass woman. A scientist, and a fighter, both bound to and defies her own race's rules. She's a lot more than meets the eye, more than the sum of her spots, as she's indeed a dual creature...

Kassidy Yates' story is quite different in Star Trek, following her own code of honor, which gets her both in trouble, and also in the spot-light and helps two important people in her life overcome their issues, and creates harmony around her.

Vic Fontaine in DS9 and the Doctor in Voyager are two unique holograms, with self-awareness, have unique capacities and missions... They are also two sides of the same coin, just like other characters I paired above. One is selfless and helps everyone, the other is an egomaniac with delusions of grandeur. Their interactions affect everyone around them.

---

I mentioned the DoctorS. After the holographic one, I want to discuss another un-named Doctor : Doctor Who, in the BBC shows from the 1960's & from 2005. This character regenerates at the end of contract, grows and retains non-linear memory of his previous and sometimes future selves, sometimes even interacting. He travels in a famous ship, capable of traversing both space and time, in any direction - although the show brings him most often back to London...
Usually, the Doctor takes aliases, and tends to be have one or several companions in his bigger-on-the-inside ship, called the Tardis - whose appearance got stuck on an old blue phone-booth, destined to call the police.

----

Leia Organa, the most famous princess of sci-fi, from the Star Wars saga, is another strong woman, who helps a rebellion against dangerous foes... I think most of you know her, right ?

Yoda's also from the same saga. He's a green alien, a teacher who speaks in broken English to his pupil... Also, you do know him, right ?
----

T'ealc is an ex-slave to an alien race who posed as a god. He joins humans in their fight against this parasitic race, and is unusually a philosopher of sorts. Kelnoreem's his speciality.

---
the UrRu race are the mystic creatures in The Dark Crystal movie from 1982. Their functions respect nature, order and live their lives slowly and simply. Oh, they also have unique songs and clothes.

---

I'm not a huge fan of the x-men, which is only a basic entertainment for me. I do love Professor X, portrayed by Patrick Stewart, the Picard from Star Trek TNG.
He's a teacher for mutants on the side of good, what's not to like about him?

----
Zan's the other name for Max Evans, in the scifi show Roswell. He's a leader, too, and a healer with unique powers which sets the entire show in motion.

----
Jeriba Shigan's a unique character in scifi. He's a sort of reptilian alien, and a male, who gives birth in the movie Enemy Mine. He sets in motion important changes for a character with whom he interacts, and has a unique language and wonderfully played by Louis Gossett JR.

----
Hermione Granger, Luna Lovegood  and Minerva McGonagal are my 3 favorite in the Harry Potter series. Minerva's a teacher, intelligent but strict, caring and a talented witch who puts her life at risk when needed.

Luna's an original girl, who can see invisible things. Her fashion tastes are unique and she's a loyal friend.

Hermione's my fav of them all ; a witty, bookish girl, a feminist, and a very talented student and witch.

----
Ta'Lon, Delenn, Susan Ivanova, John Sheridan and Lyta Alexander are some of my favorite characters on my second favorite scifi saga : Babylon 5.

Ta'Lon is a loyal and honor-bound Narn warrior, who has the soul of a poet and talent at sword fighting, but also supportive in talk when needed. I always wished he'd been in the show more often.

Lyta Alexander's a human telepath. I feel bad that she gets the short end of a stick for a long while, but she's a fighter of talent and I'd take her side any day.

Although her first name's Susan, she's usually known with her last name, Ivanova. She's fierce, she's tough, she's got some of the best lines, although she also was a victim of bad writing a few times.

Josh Sheridan's a captain of unique fate, similar to that of Sisko, yet differently. His work survives far into the future, as shown in a specific episode. He has interesting mannerisms and quotes before and after a situation, and a wonderfully complementary romantic relationship.

Delenn's my favorite in Babylon 5. She's smart, strong, witty, powerful, compassionate and the fiercest woman in this show. I love her character like Kira Nerys in DS9, and that they were so well written in their paths.

---

This concludes my post, but it's in no way exhaustive, as I love many shows, movies and books in these two genres of scifi and fantasy. I tried to be alphabetical, but that's not always an easy task, so I took a couple liberties here and there. I hope I haven't spoiled too much of a character story in my composition and that I inspired you to watch these shows, movies, or read these books, if you haven't done so thus far.

In general, these genres are far more than entertainment for me. They offer wise words, philosophical and social debates, and I hope that some of my readers who are reticent to try these genres will learn to appreciate and love them as much as myself, they do offer a lot of wonderful dramatic performances out of the confines of drama and thrillers, and general genres - thanks to the imagination of better worlds and better societal positions.
